The Relevant Past

Design has a long history and is constantly evolving. This is an exploration of medieval illuminated manuscripts alongside the work of the famous Dutch book designer, Irma Boom. Like illuminated manuscripts, the books Boom designs are a testimony to the fact that a book is more than words on a page. Investigating parallels that exist between books created centuries apart connects design in the past with design in the present-day. Without distracting from the work inside, the bright pink lettering and gold, metal book corners allude to both the manuscripts and the work of Boom within. This publication was created in fulfillment of the requirements of the Senior Thesis class. The narrative within is original writing by the designer. To read The Relevant Past, click the image below.
